The Seven Mysteries of Honjo gripped my attention right away, but it was often unevenly paced. The Mermaid’s Curse, the latest in now-franchise Paranormasight, is an exposition-heavy slow burn. Once it burns—and it burns brightly—it leaves no bridges behind. Unsurprisingly, there are mind-bending twists, rug pulls and one particularly insane tree-in-a-forest trick which I still can’t believe the game played on me.

As in The Seven Mysteries of Honjo, the player “harvests” mocking bird stickers by pixel-hunting them in a heavily post-processed photographic backgrounds. It’s as optional as before, only this time, it’s noticeably more challenging, I ended up with less than a half when I was done with the story and I’d probably not locate a couple of them without a guide. Only this time, it’s not just about unlocking files.

There’s a whole relationship chart hiding in game menus which shows a complicated web of interpersonal bird love-hate. To top it off, the players who find all the birds are prompted to watch a nonsensical theatre play starring all these birds. What a bizarre way to finish a game already full of bizarre incidents.
